How COVID-19 Has Affected Gender-based Violence

Gender-based violence increased exponentially. Many women have been being forced, by lockdown or hardship, to remain at home with their abusers.

Alongside the increase of violence against women, exposure to COVID-19 is being used as a threat; abusers are exploiting the inability of women to call for help or escape.

Crowded shelters and limited access to services and reduced peer support are exacerbating these conditions.

"It was very difficult was overcoming trauma from sexual abuse. My ex, he tried to teach me a lesson when I left him the first time. He sent three guys to break into my house to rape me. That way I would be tainted and I would only belong to him." 

After suffering this horrible abuse, Lucia spent several months recovering in a psychiatric hospital. 

"After being in the facility and having a lot of support from the community around me, that made me want to achieve my goal of going back to school, and not letting the past control or define me." 

Today, Lucia is studying to be a special education assistant with the eventual goal of becoming a kindergarten teacher.
